Shimla through the Lens

The Hills Have Eyes

Photo Location- Shimla

Photo Description- A famous movie title said "The Hills have Eyes" and with so much construction and buildings the hills of Shimla surely have eyes and that too many of them. Whenever I see this picture I wonder how urbanization has affected Shimla known as the Queen of hills and how it would be able to sustain itself.

Support wikileaks

Many may not know but Wikileaks is facing resistance from all quarters under political pressure. Mastercard, Visa and Paypal have closed Wikileaks' account and thus stopped the flow of donations from people to Wikileaks. Many banks have frozen their accounts. The website is being blocked in various countries and made target by various hacker groups. Most companies arent ready to provide hosting or domain to the website and Wikileaks articles are being taken off from many websites.

When governments are showing their political might and indulging in cyber warfare and blocking Wikileaks and its accounts isnt it time that the actual users of Internet raise protest against it?

Having seen the real face of Media in our own country (India) IT IS TIME to support an organisation like Wikileaks.

A message from the Wikileaks petition

The vicious intimidation campaign against WikiLeaks is a dangerous attack on freedom of expression and the press. Top US politicians have branded WikiLeaks a terrorist organization, and urged corporations to shut it down. Commentators have even suggested assassinating its staff.

Whatever we think of WikiLeaks, legal experts say it has likely broken no laws, and the group works with leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel) to carefully vet what it publishes - so far less than 1% of the cables leaked to it.

We urgently need a massive public outcry to defend our basic democratic freedoms. Sign the petition to stop the crackdown -- let's reach 1 million voices this week!

300,000 reached in first 24 hours! More than 355,000 have signed the petition.

Will you?

Sign the petition HERE and dont forget to spread the message.

JUSTICE IS IN YOUR HANDS NOW.

PS: I am not a big supporter of Online petitions but this specific one is from the Wikileaks itself. The link is from the official Wikileaks account on Twitter. You can check the About Us section of "Avaaz.org" where the petition is hosted to see what has been the effect of earlier campaigns by Avaaz.

Who is controlling you? Are you trusting the wrong person?

By Sanchit on Monday, January 11, 2010

who is controlling you There are many kinds of war- Civil war, Biological war, Nuclear war but the worst kind is PROPAGANDA WAR.

The reason is that it is the propaganda spread against things leads to the actual war.

In today's world most people have very strong opinions which generally dont change. Now whats the source on which the opinions are based? Newspapers, News channels, Radio etc i.e. THE MEDIA.

Now pause for a moment and think- Is the media controlling you? Is it making you believe what they want you to believe?

Its important and correct to have an opinion but is it flexible enough to change once you know the other side of story? Or have people been "brainwashed" that they dont want to even look at the other side!!

Its dangerous if you are controlled by someone else and its even more dangerous if the masses are controlled by someone else!

"The pen is mightier than the sword"

But what if the pen is in the wrong hands? Now the question comes- "Why would the media do something like this?". Their job after all is to make the people aware!

WRONG!! In the age of TRP's and Profit generation ethics are taking a back seat and money is what matters!

DID YOU KNOW??

During the recent Maharashtra elections many newspapers and news channels telecasted and wrote congress advertisements as NEWS thus manipulating the voters and ultimately the results. All this was done for MONEY. The nexus was ultimately exposed by "THE HINDU" newspaper ( Detailed post on this coming soon).

When you dont believe in advertisements of products is it right to believe in advertisements disguised in the form of news? Or has the time come to be rational and look for alternate sources of information and be flexible in approach.

Lets look at the power of Media with the help of an example.

Think about BIHAR for a moment. There are high chances that a not so good picture of it came into your mind. Widespread poverty, illiteracy, corruption, scams is what one thinks of.

But do you know that in the past year Bihar was the 2nd highest state in terms of development next only to Gujarat!! Have a look at the following article from ToI-

The perception might have changed after reading the success story of Bihar in the newspaper though you might not have believed it otherwise! Thats the power Media carries.

Though it doesnt mean that whole Media is at fault or they do not do anything right. Media has highlighted many important issues in the past and will do so even in the future. But it is time to realize the nexus functioning in Media ( The movie Rann would throw more light on this I hope). Should people stop believing media blindly and start analysing themselves?

There opinion might not change even after that but then they are sure that its their OWN opinion and not someone controlling them.

Godhra Riots- A communal blunder and BJP's worst nightmare. But do you know 1984 Anti-Sikh riots were much worse (A detailed post coming soon).

Varun Gandhi's much publicized speech against the muslims. A similar speech was made against the Hindus in Andhra Pradesh I guess at a similar time. NO NEWS! Also check the manifesto of the NCP candidate here . Again NO NEWS!

Congress- Party for the youth. An analysis of the MP's after election revealed that BJP had more "youth" MP's than congress. And after few months another report in ToI mentioned that Congress youth MP's had started LEAST discussions in Parliament!

Sugar at Rs 50/- kg, More than 30% of population STILL below poverty line, 50 years of Congress (Common man's govt) rule, No talk of price rise in Media! Connect the dots.

Is It time to start looking for answers?

Dont trust media

river Ganga article

Below is the link to a very thoughtful article about the Majestic River Ganga of which maybe there would be just tales left to tell to our children as the river might not even exist!!

Interesting Fact- Ganga is the only river in the world whose water is not affected even when it is stored for many years. Even mineral water is affected after sometime. Scientists say that it happens because of a special type of Bacteria but there is no concrete reason as to why the "special" bacteria is only found in Ganga water!

Finding blood donors in case of emergency

Blood emergency
Few months ago I was browsing some forums when I saw a topic created by someone who needed blood for her friend's mom and it was EMERGENCY. Since the blood group was o -ve which is very rare blood wasnt available so she was looking for some help and donors. I started my search looking for donors and in the end could provide her a list of many potential donors. So I would like to share the process here that how you can find blood donors during emergency incase the need arise so that it maybe helpful for someone in future.

1.) http://www.friendstosupport.org/index.aspx - This is a great website where a database is created of volunteers. You can search for donors by blood group, state, city etc. post requests and can have a look at important information. Just check out the website.

2.) http://indianblooddonors.in/ - Same as above.

3.) Social networking websites- Search for a particular blood group on these websites and you will find many communities/groups already existing. Join them and start scanning the forums. Most of the times you will find a database of volunteers or their contact details. Otherwise you can contact them through scraps, messages etc.

4.) Google- It is probably the best place to look for anything. If you know googling you can find many volunteers. Just do a google search with some query like "list of blood donors in XXX" (xxx is name of city) or "blood group donor city" and you can find many results. Google is the last alternative if you cant find donors through 1st two methods.

Why dont good parties stand a chance in elections!

By Sanchit on Sunday, May 10, 2009

good political party Amost all people are tired of both BJP and the congress. Everyone wants the alternative to them which is good. Few people and parties have the courage to stand up to them and even then they dont stand a chance to win because of these reasons-

1.) Apathy of educated people towards voting- Educated people doesnt care about voting and poor and illiterate dont know the advantage of these parties.

2.) Gross flouting of norms by influential parties- Influential parties openly flout the EC norms and there is no surprise that they are let away easily!

3.) Media biasness- Media is not really interested in advocating the case of these parties and people as it doesnt generate much TRP but truth cant be suppressed. Check the below article-

----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------

Accusing both BJP and Congress candidates for the New Delhi parliamentary constituency of violating electoral laws, the Youth For Equality (YFE) on Friday lodged a written complaint with the Election Commission of India (EC) calling for rejection of their candidatures.

YFE president, Kaushal Kant Mishra alleged that Congress candidate Ajay Maken and BJP’s Vijay Goel had put hoardings and advertisements in gross violation of the election code of conduct.

Accusing both the candidates of spending money beyond the stipulated expenditure of 25 lakhs, YFE leader asked the Election Commission to look into the evidences submitted by them and take appropriate action.

To support their argument, YFE leaders also submitted a Compact Disc containing pictures of hoardings and advertisements put up by both candidates across New Delhi constituency.

YFE has demanded that both candidates must account for the money spent on the large number of hoardings and asked the Election Commission to cancel their candidature if they have spent beyond the limit.

Mishra called for removal of the hoardings in twenty four hours in case the candidates claimed that they were not responsible for putting up these advertisements.

YFE claimed that both Congress and BJP were misusing official position to further the political agenda. “On every lamp post and street light and public convenience, the faces of Vijay Goel and Ajay Maken are conspicuous by their presence”, said YFE spokesperson, Jiten Jain.

The Election Commission was also asked to get those private hoardings removed, where the agreement copies have not been submitted with the Returning Officer. Either these hoardings have been put up by the candidates themselves or their sponsors, which is against the law, claimed YFE.

YFE spokesperson Jiten Jain alleged hoardings and posters put up by Maken and Goel did not carry the name of publisher and the serial numbers, which was also against EC rules.

He also wanted to know, who was funding the promotional package of Congress candidate Ajay Maken, comprising a diary and a calendar, which is being distributed to each and every household by a courier agency.

The youth organisation also alleged that while no action was being taken against the political parties for violating poll laws, YFE activists were being stopped from distributing even pamphlets.

Citing an instance, president Kaushal Kant Mishra, said that one of their worker was roughed up at the Karol Bagh Metro station, while he was giving handbills to commuters.

Calling for action against those violating poll code, YFE activists said that they will sit in front of the Election Commission office till some action was initiated on their complaint.

Clean politicians in Chandigarh

The youth and upper middle class today is not interested in voting. The reason they give is that " All candidates and parties are alike and they all are corrupt". Many wish Section 49-o to come into existence so that they can chose "none of the above" option.

Thinking that all candidates are corrupt is often a case of ignorance. In mumbai a leading surgeon and an investement banker (both women) stood this time but most probably they will lose this time as the "educated and urban middle class" which should have been their vote bank didn't come out to vote because of two reasons-

1.) They didn't know about them

2.) They didn't have the will to vote

So for people who think that they will not vote this time because there is no suitable candidate (in chd) take a look at this website
http://www.ajaygoyal.in/ of Candidate Ajay goyal.

He is an independent candidate and does not belong to any party. Other details, manifesto, qualification etc all can be found at the website. So if you think BJP and Congress doesnt deserve your vote atleast dont let it go waste and vote for some deserving candidate.

We all know that it is very unlikely that he will win this time but instead of not voting people should vote for the right candidate.

What will it do?? How does it matter??

If the voting %age is high the political parties will come to know that Urban middle class and youth is a vote bank and they vote for clean politicians so they will field candidates accordingly. More and more good people will come to politics knowing that good and aware people will vote for them.

Remember at the end of day A politician is as good as people who vote for him. If you want illiterate, poor, corrupt, thieves, criminals etc to vote for the good candidate while you enjoy your election holiday and sleep THAT IS JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. So atleast vote someone to show that educated middle class is also a vote bank that cant be manipulated.

DISCLAIMER:- I am not associated with the candidate nor I am campaigning for him. I came to know about this candidate so made a post to tell people about less known candidates in Chd. If anyone know any other good candidate they can mail me and I will add them too.

Section 49-o- The myth and the reality

By Sanchit on Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Filed Under:

The Internet these days is flooded with articles about SECTION 49-o. People are sending and recieving emails and social networking websites like Orkut and Facebook are flooded with topics on Section 49-o. The HOAX mail claim that under section 49-o we can choose the option of not voting anyone and if the no. of persons voting for none of the above exceed the other voting percentage all candidates will be disqualified and Re-Polling would be held with new candidates. Unfortunately many people didn't thought of verifying this and spread the rumour forward which created lots of confusion.

So what is the truth??

The truth is Section 49-o exist and its purpose as per paragraph given on Indian govt. website is-

49-O. Elector deciding not to vote.-If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark.

Implementation- The real inclusion of article 49-0 in the rule book is to prevent election fraud, so that other people don’t caste their vote using your identity. The Election Commission didn’t bother extending it further specifying what would happen in case the number of “none” votes exceeded those of the other candidates.

So what is the myth?

The myth is that there is re-polling. The truth is that THERE IS NO RE-POLLING. The result will remain the same, the person who gets the highest number of votes wins. Which also means that even if the majority of the nation feels that amongst the candidates standing none of them fits the bill and none would do justice to the nation as the next PM, theres no rule (as of now) which will ensure re-polling.

So now you know the truth and the next time when someone tells you about section 49-o you know what you have to say!

Spread Awareness.
